It represents the various ways passion and desire are expressed, how we fight for what we want.

Mars in Aries. Those with this combination express passion urgently and aggressively. They initiate activities, are spontaneous, like to take risks, are rash and accident prone. Territorial, they want to lead, to be first and best. There is bravery and courage, but it is not well directed because of jealousy, aggression and contests for control and leadership.

The evolutionary task is to fight against blind and forceful desire, to balance and control it. As this takes effect, then gradually desire is transformed into spiritual aspiration. Self-control is a momentous development in Aries and when achieved, an intelligent and assertive leader steps forth, one who fights with fiery power for the higher good.

Mars in Taurus. This group of people are stubborn if opposed and they are very territorial. The desire nature is volatile and explosive - driven by the “bull of desire” the appetites are voracious. In the rush to satisfy them, the personality swings from the heights of exhilaration to the depths of despair. But there is also tremendous bravery and courage.

In Taurus, the task is to release oneself from the hold of lower desire. As the emotions purify and desire transmutes into spiritual aspiration, gradually those with this combination emerge as warriors of light stable and lighted vessels through which the soul can direct its power. They have the power to fight with the determined steel of higher will and persevere for as long as it takes to achieve higher goals.

Mars in Gemini. This combination links the emotional nature and mind so that the energy of the mind speeds up. There is mental acuteness and combativeness, hot and angry thoughts, volatile verbal outbursts and a lot of talk. Wants and needs are communicated assertively and defensively, sometimes aggressively. There is talent with initiating ideas and putting them into action.

The development task is to cultivate mental and emotional balance and direct Mars' force wisely so that communications remain powerful but not aggressive. As spiritual disciplines are applied and lower desire wanes, the observing consciousness will grow and glow. Working at its best, this combination gives a master orator who is powerful in debate because the mind is fast and words are used skilfully, like a rapier to foil opponents.

Mars in Cancer. Mars falls in this sign, so its negative side is often seen - angry emotions that swamp rational thought. There are moods, jealousies, grievances and resentments over past hurts. Those with this combination like to retreat into their shell, but will come out fighting to protect the home and family. They fight for those they care about.

As the emotional life refines, it lifts energy from the solar plexus up to the heart chakra so that desire transmutes into spiritual aspiration, giving the soul a clear channel through which to work. In Cancer, we fight to free ourselves from bondage to the emotions and when successful, fight to free the masses from this slavery as well.

Mars in Leo. Those with this combination are very prideful and arrogant and like to make an impact on people. The passions are expressed grandly, with flair and a lot of noise. There are explosions of anger, sulks, dramatic displays and much dismissing of people who offend from the royal presence.

The task is to displace the selfish ego from the seat of control and bring it into line with the soul (wisdom). This is achieved through character building and the application of spiritual disciplines. When successful, the soul has a clear path through which to radiate its fire. Those at this level have the power of the Sun streaming through the heart. Mars in Leo develops warrior-leaders who are inspired to fight for the greater good.

Mars in Virgo. Passion is expressed fastidiously and scrupulously. Those with this combination pursue their desires in a practical and methodical manner. They fight with “the facts”, by proving themselves to be right, and can be hyper-critical if opposed. Sometimes the emotions are inhibited, resulting in passive aggression and muted spitefulness.

Positively, there is often expertise with all things manual and practical. When soul illumination purifies the emotional life and desire is transmuted into spiritual aspiration, the Christ-spirit (love and wisdom) will birth in the heart. Those at this level have the intelligence, will and talent to free humanity from ill-health, poverty and the drudgery that occurs amongst the poor and impoverished.

Mars in Libra. When Mars heats up the sacral centre, passion and excitement are demanding. But Mars is in its detriment in Libra, which means its aggressive side is somewhat muted. However, unhealed Mars in Libra indicates selfishness in relationships, conflict and arguments. There is a warlike touch to the mind so that mental barbs can be acute, if subtle. Sometimes men with this placement feel their “malc-side” is not strong and feel “less manly” in comparison to testosterone types.

In the more advanced, as desire transmutes into spiritual aspiration the soul has a clear and balanced astral field through which to work. Because inner equilibrium has been achieved, it gives the power to harmonise conflicting forces in people and to generally establish peace and harmony in the environment.

Mars in Scorpio. The desires are passionate and intense, the sexual urges strong and compelling. Deep and secretive, those with this combination try to hide what they feel for protective purposes - they are warriors who do not like to show their weaknesses. They make vengeful opponents, are very territorial and fight to win. At the lower level, glamour and bias distorts reality, giving rise to churning emotions that are dark, aggressive, retaliatory and revengeful. Battles are fought, within as well as with others.

Across lives, the illumined mind gradually disperses the darkness, and desire transmutes into spiritual aspiration. The purified astral nature becomes a lighted vessel that can be used to deal intelligently with life stress. Having developed the power to fight and defeat the darkness within, now the same can be done for others.

Mars in Sagittarius. The passions are a combination of jovial humour and assertiveness. People with this combination are fiery, reactive and have an enormous appetite for sensuous and physical pleasures which they pursue with one-pointed gusto. They like travel, to explore, to seek out adventures. They can also be blunt, insensitive and attack with words. A few can be boozing, gambling, tricksters and con-men.

When desire transmutes into spiritual aspiration, these travellers re-direct their explorations towards higher and finer ideals and goals. Such people are inspirational leaders and teachers and have the power to guide men and women onto the higher way, towards their higher ideals and spiritual goals - towards the mountain top of enlightenment!

Mars in Capricorn. Passion is expressed with exacting and intelligent skill - Mars is exalted in this sign. Those with this combination pursue their ambitions in a responsible and methodical manner and have the drive to succeed. Very territorial, they can also be aggressive and controlling to get what they want and to hold onto it. Lower types will try to destroy anyone who stands between them and the success, money and power they crave. But karma awaits those who violate the Law of Love. The lower will is broken through humiliation and adversity, forcing the personality to its knees. This is a requirement for higher progression.

As wisdom shines through, ambition transmutes into an aspiration to climb the higher ethical, moral spiritual mountains. In higher Capricorn, we fight to release ourselves from the slavery of material ambition and when this is achieved, have the power and drive to serve the greater good, the Plan of God.

Mars in Aquarius. These are mental-warrior types who use the mind and forceful ideas to fight for their ideals and for what they want. Lower types, believing they are always “right”, they try to defeat all opposition with facts and pointed arguments. Beliefs are aggressively defended and expressed. Thwarted, they become rebellious and unpredictable activists and anarchists.

As these emotions clear, the astral nature gradually becomes a vessel through which the soul can inspire its owner to reach out in friendship and love to the community and to all humanity. In Aquarius, we are given the opportunity to break free from the prison of illusion and when we achieve this, have the power of clear and rational thought and arguments to help humanity do the same.

Mars in Pisces. Desire submerged in this watery sign can result in lethargy, blunted ambition and feelings of impotency. Men with this placement sometimes feel their “male side” is weak. But emotions bubble away beneath the surface and can manifest as confused resentment and passive-aggression. Some with this combination may resort to victim-like behaviour in an attempt to manipulate people to do what they want.

As the astral field refines, becomes quiet and light-filled, kind action, love and compassion flowing through from Pisces can be radiated to the world. With Mars in this sign, we fight to free ourselves from drowning in the astral currents and when successful, fight to help others to do the same.
