A question sometimes asked is, “Can I have children?” Here is where to look in the chart.

1. The 5th house

• If children are desired, it helps to have the fertile signs - Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, on the fifth house of Children cusp. Taurus is also helpful, since the Moon is exalted in that sign. Consequently, it is not helpful to have barren signs on the 5th - Gemini, Leo, Virgo.
• It is helpful to have the ruler of the 5th in one of the fertile signs and well aspected.
• It helps to have the benefics Venus and Jupiter, or the Moon (these three are “the givers” of children), in the 5th and well aspected, or any planet in the 5th be well aspected, especially by the Moon or Jupiter. Consequently, it is not helpful to have malefics in the 5th. Pluto (loss, death, denial). Saturn and Mars deny children. Uranus can indicate difficulty conceiving or carrying full term. It can also indicate children coming by unorthodox means, such as by adoption. Neptune, loss through unknown causes.
• Several planets in the 5th indicate being surrounded by children. These may be children of one's own body, or children that come by other means, such as by adoption, by marrying someone with children or working with them such as in school teaching or sports coaching. Sometimes planets here represent characteristics of the different offspring, the first planet representing the first child, the second planet the second child, etc.

2. The Moon and Cancer

• The sign Cancer and its ruling planet Moon rule childbirth and child-raising. They should be examined in both male and female charts as indicators of potential parenthood. They are the primary rulers of the female reproductive system and female fertility.
• When children are wanted, the best signs for the Moon to be in are Cancer (in dignity) and Taurus (exalted). It also helps if the Moon is well aspected - especially by Venus or Jupiter or located in the 5th.
• Consequently, the Moon poorly placed in Capricorn or Scorpio is not helpful. Neither is it in cadent houses, or if it has hard aspect from malefics. Hard lunar afflictions in female charts indicate conception, pregnancy and child-raising problems.

Weigh the odds. Often, indications regarding children are mixed which means that there may be some initial problems or delays with conception or birth which can be overcome with care. If there have been difficulties ask for the medical report. Weigh the positive indications against the negative, before making a final decision to the question “Can I have children?” But even if matters look bleak, never say “no”. Try to leave hope intact.

Princess Soraya, born 22 June 1932, 10:30 pm, Isfahan Iran. Soraya was the queen consort of the Shah of Iran who she married in 1951. When doctors told her and the shah, that she was infertile and would never have children, they divorced in 1958.

She had Cancer on the fifth house and Venus within it - these are fortunate. But unfortunately, Pluto - the “drastic” planet, was also in the 5th. It squares Uranus, which suggests a genetic difficulty.

The Moon is opposed by Jupiter, which is in Leo, a barren sign; and it is deposed by Uranus, reinforcing the genetic difficulty.
