Humanity’s Quest For Union
(and how a new perspective can change the human sexual relation)
Sex in terms of energy
At the highest spiritual levels, well above basic physical/sacral desire, sex is intended to be seen or experienced as the relation of the so called lower man to the higher Self. At this level, the sex act of consummation is then Soul awareness. The reality of this inner fusion and harmony that is so craved by aspirants and disciples that have touched soul, cannot be duplicated over any period of time at the lower physical level, but will be realized with a transcendence in consciousness and soul awareness when union of soul and personality is achieved.
When we consider the ‘cosmic’ level, sex attraction is the attractive force between spirit and matter, life and form and is ultimately an expression of the Law of Attraction. At our level, as the activity of the soul attracts or draws us to it, we usually ‘step down’ this energy into the sacral/astral centres and interpret it as attraction between male and female. Or at least some of us have been known to.
In our world of ‘forms’, these forms made up of elemental lives, contribute to the sex attraction impulse. The man who is un-evolved will display a crude approach to life on the physical plane, at least partly due to the type of elemental lives that he attracted and his form was built from, whereas the evolved person/soul will attract a much finer form and therefore not be so heavily imbued with coarse desires. We are also told that these elemental lives are responsible for the chemical affinity between one human body and the other and this animal magnetism works under the Law of Attraction and Repulsion, and there is a gravitational effect between any two forms. As well, our cells can have ‘something’ of what they respond to in the other person or environment and this force enables the physical body to recognize a harmonious physical surrounding or harmony with another person, although this is not related necessarily to the attraction between men and women as it also can be of a place or of a person of the same sex.. we are not told what this effect is, but I suppose it has something to do with harmony in Ray and Astrology make-up. Geoff Logie has advised that this is actually a type of phenomena called psychometry and it is active on all the planes.
The instinct that lies behind the sex urge is actually the fear of separateness, isolation and aloneness and this has served to ensure the propagation of the species. We should as well consider the issues of, evolutionary instinct for self-preservation – for the preservation of the species – plus ‘my’ immortality, and the animal preservation of the herd. The Tibetan says its also a ‘revolt against separative unity on the physical plane’ which I believe is the notion of our highest calling to not engage in sex outside of needed propagation (separative unity) yet realize and live as one.
Ultimately we will find consummation in the so called marriage, with conscious intention, between the positive soul and negative and receptive form.
Looking further at energy, we are an expression of various energies which galvanize or illumine us through the centres. The three centres below the diaphragm; Base of spine, Sacral centre, Solar plexus centre need to be raised to the Heart centre and Throat centre above the diaphragm (the loving heart and creative throat), and these all in turn need to be raised to the Ajna centre (symbol of matter – negative - feminine) and thus we have a highly effective and evolved personality. As well, the Head centre is in play as the contact point for the soul to reach personality (symbol of spirit – positive – masculine). Connected with all this is the pituitary gland and the pineal gland which are in reality the higher correspondence to the male and female sex organs and at some point the energy of these two centres make contact and we have Father-spirit and Mother-matter united. The pituitary and pineal glands are the externalization of the ajna and crown – the correspondence of personality and soul, hence, as the crown chakra is vitalized, the pineal (which is usually atrophied soon after birth) begins to overshadow the pituitary. We can look at an example of astrological energies later.
We are told that man has the drama of sex re-enacted three times:
- With the standard physical plane sex that we are all acquainted with and no doubt fond of. (meant to reproduce the species)
- In the union of the lower energy to the higher which would result in loving and creative work.
- In the union of the energies in the head (personality) with the soul, which is known as the birth of Christ.
So what’s the issue
It seems that we have allowed the lower energies to dominate and have gone with our lower desires which has led to the spread of disease and an ignoring of our higher calling which has manifested in an overly active sexual approach to life, especially related to the Atlantean hyper-astral influences still with us, or at the opposite end of the scale, an equally unhealthy puritanical approach.
The Tibetan states that the normal and natural animal instinctual desire is not so much of a problem as the emotional attitudes that have developed over time. This makes sense to me as we witness the various approaches and reactions to sex satisfaction at this point in time, based often in the astral area.
- Free love and promiscuity, prostitution, group sex. Much of this is fueled and heavily influenced by the hapless news media, pornography, media advertising and a wish life to be just like the rich and famous and powerful who are perceived to have no end to their sexual and material enjoyments. In this area I would add the perceived ‘need’ to be loved or wanted being dropped down and translated through the lower centers.
- Orthodox religious beliefs that sex is terribly sinful and must be avoided or hidden. Much of this comes from the various church’s (St.Paul influenced) wrong headed dogma and ones own concerns for entrance into heaven and of course the news media that delights in demonizing those that publicly fall to the lower desires.
- Weird perversions, such as the extreme approach by certain groups of the Islamic faith that view women as evil and something that must be suppressed and covered as they tempt men. Much of this comes from a twisted interpretation of the Koran.
- Homosexuality is apparently a type of mental perversion and a distorted attitude of mind which results in physical practices that are extremely ancient and this attitude is one of thinking that this lifestyle is a step forward on the path or for the race, yet it is the opposite. It is a point of retrogression and the swinging back into an ancient rhythm. Much of this currently is due to the fact that this behaviour is often seen when a civilization is crumbling and the old order is changing into something new. (perhaps Pisces to Aquarius) and awakens in some of us the desire for that which is a new and untried field of expression and for the unusual. Weak minds then succumb to the impulse or strongly experimenting souls fall to the lower nature. The Tibetan gives us a lot of detail around homosexuality as follows:
(EH. 62)
“Homosexuality is what you might call a ‘leftover’ from the sexual excesses of Lumarian times, an inherited taint if you like. Egos who individualised and incarnated in that vast period of time are the ones who today demonstrate homosexual tendencies. In those days, so urgent was the sexual appetite, the normal processes of human intercourse did not satisfy the insatiable desire of the advanced man of the period. Soul force, flowing in through the processes of individualisation , served to stimulate the lowest centres….. those who thus practised them are today, in great numbers, in incarnation, and the ancient habits are too strong for them. They are now far enough advanced upon the evolutionary path so that the cure lies ready at this time — if they choose to employ it. They can with relative ease, transfer the sex impulse to the throat centre, and thus become creative in the higher sense, employing the energy sensed and circulating in right and constructive ways…. It is well known that among the so called artistic types, homosexuality is very prevalent. I say “so-called” for the truly creative artist is not the victim of these ancient evil predisposing habits.”
He goes on to say that there are three kinds of homosexuality and the first is the major one which he has described above and he points out that those individualised on the Moon or Earth chain are not susceptible. The second one is ‘imitative’ as a number of people imitate their ‘betters’ and go this way usually due to an overactive imagination, curiosity and so forth and this category accounts for the sodomites and lesbians. The third are the extremely rare hermaphrodites which combine in them both sexes. He concludes by saying that this ‘taint’ has its roots in the astral or sentient body.
From an astrological perspective, during the 60’s/70’s and onwards we had the baby boomers coming into maturity along with the advent of the birth control pill coupled with the cultural push of rock and roll music and mis-behaviour as a way to break out from the old order and later on, to the urge for material wealth. If we take just one planet into consideration during this point in time we can see the new energies emerge:
For the masses, those born after 1942 (in Virgo) had Neptune in Libra (1942 to 1956) and Libra is ruled by Venus exoterically, which would have an influence of unrealistic idealism and desire to liberalize sex and relationships.
From 1956 to 1970 Neptune was in Scorpio which is ruled by Mars/Pluto exoterically which brings conflict and desire and the lower nature has a strong impulse to rule over. This could be seen as sexual desire and could also manifest as a desire to rule over others, such as the religious fanatics, so both sides of the ‘opposites’ come into view.
In this we can see perhaps some of the influence across our civilization that one planet has had. If we went further along in time we would see Neptune in Capricorn which would have the influence of greed and ambition and avarice. We can also look at those born with Uranus (the awakener) in Cancer which often brings radical change and so with Uranus in Cancer from 1942 to 1956, radical change in the home and family life.
With the birth control pill, women are freer sexually which helps to balance the scale and give more equal opportunity with men. Also, population control is now more possible, so the pill has many advantages today, based on the point of spiritual development of the majority of humanity. Population control is an important issue as souls are being forced to incarnate before they are ready due to the population explosion. If humanity was at a high level spiritually, then the need for the pill would likely not be necessary.
Another issue is the spread of disease which is to a great extent the result of promiscuity and the Tibetan says it lies back of the bulk of many of the ailments which humanity currently suffers from. He is not just referring to the obvious sexual diseases such as syphilis, but psychological problems as well.
Overall, it seems that our issue with sex is not just an over use of the sexual equipment, but also the inhibitions that have been drilled into us from the past making sex unusually sinful. The puritanical approach from the past has made sex an ‘indecent secret’ rather than a normal instinctual and natural process and I believe that what we see today in excessive sexual behaviour is partly a backlash that will balance out over time. Perhaps we are also witnessing sexual activity and attitudes at the extreme end of the scale of ‘opposites’, with the middle path yet to be found and a partial clue to the solution may be found here.
Key influences
As higher energies flow in, the effect is to stimulate the form life, across the board, which will produce both good and bad results. Evil (The Tibetan says evil is that which can be controlled or subdued but which is permitted to govern) can temporarily emerge as well as lasting righteousness. If the effect produces materialistic tendencies and we are inclined in that direction, then the lower form nature, rather than the divine becomes dominant. Evil could also be defined as anything that tends toward separateness – how does the coming together of sex get to be considered the evil of tending towards separateness? When it is engaged for purpose of self-aggrandizement.
Boys are often taught as a rite of passage, that the pursuit of females and sex is paramount. This approach has a component of power, control or possession. Girls are taught sex and allure as a manipulation and as a way to get what they want or need and it has a component of materialism. The Tibetan tells us that as we become less materialistic and possessive of what is ‘mine’, the sex problem will be greatly diminished.
Three events are taking place of great influence that has caused and will influence further the current sex problem, yet on the other hand these events will also herald a turning to spiritual realities.
The first is the coming in of the 7th Ray which brings initially a materialistic pursuit and as it pours into the planetary sacral centre, the sex life of humanity is over stimulated. The 7th Ray notion of spirit into matter can also influence a stronger sex drive. However, it also brings the power to organize and integrate the pairs of opposites which will eventually lead to our living more as spiritual beings.
The second is the age of Aquarius which stimulates the spirit of universality and fusion and brings an urge to ‘union’, both higher and lower. This will also bring synthesis in business and religion.
Thirdly, the coming of Christ will bring an inflow of the spirit of love and the result will again be two-fold so both the good and evil, material desire and spiritual aspiration will be awakened.
We are told that, love and sex are one and the same thing, for both express the meaning of the Law of Attraction. Love is sex and sex is love, and in these two words the relation the interplay and the union between God and His universe, between man and God, between man and his own soul and between man and women is depicted. We need to remember though that the underlying result of these relations is supposed to be the manifestation of form so divinity can express itself.
The Tibetan gave us an extensive amount of astrological information around Mars transmuted to Neptune and the tests of Scorpio with Pluto’s role as well, all concerning desire and sex. I have not covered the astrology work in great detail as I suspect it is fairly well known and can be researched easily.
Opportunity and approach
Over the next couple of hundred years we will experience opportunity that will encourage the old influences to die out as we see here.
Three things characterise the Aquarian age, led by the three planets that govern the Aquarian decanates.
- In the first decanate, the activity of Saturn will produce a dividing of the old ways and then choices can be made, assisted with the discipline of Saturn. Humanity can enter in to its so called birthright using the discrimination inherent in this energy.
- Next the influence of Mercury which pours in the light of mental and spiritual illumination and a clearer or truer interpretation of the teaching due to Mercury being the messenger of the gods. So the first decanate will enable many people to make choices that will assist them to raise the lower energies into the higher centres and thus bring their focus from below to above the diaphragm. The second decanate will enable those that are ready to fuse personality and soul, thus bringing loving and creative work abilities.
- With the third decanate we now will see Brotherhood inaugurated with Venus (higher mind) controlling with intelligent love. So the group good becomes important with unselfish cooperation.
These changes will bring a new attitude to sex and marriage and psychology will be the dominant science emphasizing the nature of consciousness and the depth of our subconscious. We will better understand our urges and the relationship of male and female and the emphasis will be on discovering our life purpose. Love and desire will still be in play, yet the true significance of marriage will be appreciated and understood.
The Tibetan gives us three premises that will underlie the thinking of the future:
- Our male/female sex relations and marriage will be regarded as group life and serving the group good. This will come about through education, service and the understanding of the law of love. Men and women will know themselves as the cells in a vital organism and the responsibility this entails. So we will live less in our physical sexual urges and more in the creative expression. I recall reading somewhere in the Tibetan literature that at the basic elemental life level of our form, our minds or mental level is seen as God.. this seems to be a correspondence to our soul trying to influence our personalities to ultimately redeem the lower nature and join spirit and matter. It would seem that we need to tame and influence and raise the elementals as well. We have a responsibility and urge to raise these lives as does our soul to raise us.
- Marriage will be regarded as undesirable and ill-mated if, by example, one is living below the diaphragm and the other above. This premise is based on the point of evolution of the two parties and I will deal further with marriage later.
- The third premise is the desire to provide good and healthy bodies for the incarnating egos.
Given the current situation and a view of the incoming energies and direction, what is humanity to do — what is our approach?
The Tibetan says that the ideal still lies ahead, yet is it possible to take steps that will eventually lead to the necessary adjustments concerning sex. If the following four basic postulates are successfully presented and kept in the forefront of public opinion, the necessary activities should follow. The education of these four essential aspects or laws so that they are embedded in the consciousness is the overriding issue.
But first, a reflection on the basis of sex. Man has been swept up by the instinctual animal nature and only a clear mental understanding will bring us to a proper understanding of the nature and function of sexual activity. We need to learn and deeply understand that the main purpose of sex is not satisfaction of the appetites, but the providing of physical bodies through which life can be expressed. The so called law of sex is the law of those relations whereby life and form are brought together in order that divine purpose may be realised. This is fundamental of creation and is true whether we are dealing with the informing life of a solar system or with the birth of an animal or with the appearance of a plant from a seed. Sex is simply the word used to cover the relation which exists between that energy we call life and the aggregate of force units through which that energy expresses itself and builds a form. It covers the activity that takes place when the pairs of opposites are brought together and by the means that they become at-one, they produce a third reality. You have relation, at-one-ment and birth.. the true significance of sex. Currently man has lost this significance as sex currently means the satisfaction of desire for sensuous pleasure and this leads to a relatively momentary pleasure that is confined to the animal nature.
The first postulate is that the general public needs to be made aware and convinced that all souls incarnate and reincarnate under the law of rebirth. So each life recapitulates the previous life experience as well as it assumes past obligations, recovers old relations, pays indebtedness, makes restitution, awakens deep seated qualities, recognizes old friends and enemies, finds solution to injustices and learns what conditions him. The Tibetan says all this is “crying out for universal recognition”. Once understood this will go some distance to solving the sex issue as once this law is known men will tread more carefully along the path and will be cautious as to how they fulfill their family and group obligations. They will now know that “whatsoever a man soweth, that will he also reap, and he will reap it here on earth, not in a heaven or hell”.
The second postulate was given by the Christ when he told us to “love our neighbour as ourselves”. No one has paid much attention to this statement in practise in spite of 2,000 years having gone by since ‘the greatest expression of God’s love, Jesus, walked on Earth’. So we still fight and hate and use our power to selfish ends and our bodies for pleasure. If however we had obeyed his command, much of the strife and war and crime and sex problems would now be behind us. The Tibetan terms it, “let a man so live that his life is harmless” and this is not a negative harmlessness, but of a difficult and positive activity.
These first two postulates sound too simple, yet the Tibetan says that by moulding life around these two recognitions (Law of rebirth/Law of love) it would save humanity as the power behind them is the power of divinity itself. Eventually evolution will force the recognition of these laws, however it would be much better and less painful if the disciples of the world carried it forward.
The third postulate underlying the solution to much of our problems, including sex, grows out of the first two. The Law of group life in which our group relations and connectedness must be recognized and acknowledged. We must not only fulfill in love the obligations of family, but also of humanity itself and bring the Law of brotherhood into full expression. When solving or facing our problems we will need to ask will this action tend to group good… will this action hurt.. will it benefit the group and create progress, integration and unity. Action that fails to measure up will be discarded and so the individual will slowly learn to subordinate the personal good and pleasure for the group requirements and we can now see how this will help to solve the sex issue.
The final postulate is that the server of the race co-operates with the laws of the land in his daily life, while working for the injustices that they may produce. If the first three are followed, then this last one will necessarily lead to the desire to fall in behind whatever the laws of the land are in which he incarnates.
Exactly how these four postulates can best be ‘drilled’ into humanities consciousness is something that the disciples and other so called thought leaders need to grapple with.
Now for a more detailed look at the issue of union or sex.
Marriage and children/cleavages
With the words ‘Peace’ and ‘Goodwill’ you have two keywords which express the bridging or connecting or marrying of two cleavages in man. One in the psychic nature, for instance, between the mind and the emotional vehicle and once bridged, brings ‘peace’. The other is between the personality and the soul and this bridge resolves a basic split, brought about by the will-to-good (goodwill). These bridge not only the greatest cleavages in a man, but they also will bring about the fusion between evolved humanity and the Hierarchy.
It’s due to the almost unconscious recognition of these cleavages and of the need for their fusion, which has made marriage and the consummating act of sex, the great mystical symbol. The Tibetan says these are cleavages in our consciousness and are not actual cleavages in fact — something to reflect on.
We are told that the motive leading to marriage will undergo profound changes during the next one thousand years, though the basic motive – that of love between two people – will remain unchanged yet be more properly emphasised and selflessly expressed. The union of two people is symbolic of all the great dualities in the universe, such as the hierarchy of souls and the world of humanity, or the union of the soul and form. Currently marriage tends to be a union of the purely physical, yet it needs to be a union of the separated halves on all three planes —physical, emotional and mental, then we will see the restitution of the marriage relation to its intended position, the blending of the two into one.
Parenting or having children is often seen as a purely physical and animal function or even as a social ‘thing’ to do, or maybe an economic thing to do, for instance concerning welfare payments. In the future a deliberately prepared and constructed (no doubt etheric) web of light between parents and child will be taught, even pre-natally. The Tibetan does not tell us specifically how this will be accomplished, but says the child will come into life with ‘the light’ (I assume of consciousness) already embedded and functioning rather than the current approach of the light hovering around the child waiting for an opportunity to pounce and irradiate the consciousness.
Parenthood has a symbolic relationship to the Hierarchy, for the family unit is the symbol upon earth of the Hierarchy and it’s through the two happenings of sexual relations and physical birth that the vast Hierarchy of souls can achieve physical manifestation and attain spiritual perfection.
Concerning parenthood and training the Tibetan gives us the following five points to consider and ponder:
(Educ. in new age. 131—)
- The emphasis in the future will shift from the urge to produce large families to that of producing quality and intelligence in the off-spring. This will include that science of which eugenics is the distorted and exoteric indication. When the fact of the etheric body with its force centres is scientifically established, the above prophecy will assume significance and meaning. (as well the issue of the web of light between parent and child can be taught)
- The need or tendency of an increasing birthrate will eventually be regarded as erroneous, and this for three reasons which it would profit you to study:
- Many souls are rapidly achieving perfection and passing away altogether from our planetary life. This process will be intensified during the coming Aquarian age. It should be remembered that the door will be shut for some time as yet upon the animal kingdom, and for a long period no individualisation will culminate in materialisation into physical bodies. Technically, any individualisation which may take place will be that which is technically called ‘individualisation into pralaya, there to await the inevitable call”. There will be therefore no necessity for a massed and hurried creation of human forms.
- The economic situation will make it necessary that certain physical restrictions should be imposed, because it is now evident that beyond a certain point the planet cannot support humanity. This is more fundamental in its implications than you can imagine. Again, we have evidence of a growing realisation of the race along this particular line; that realisation is as yet distorted and much misunderstood and is today producing the promiscuous use of contraceptive methods. As the intelligence of the race is developed, as the Laws of Rhythm and Approach are grasped, it will then be found that there are certain innate reactions which will negate conception, and then the mechanical means will no longer be required. This sounds as yet extremely vague and almost impossible, but the race is rapidly achieving personality control, even though our idea of rapidity may not be yours (Tibetan humour here) and this in turn, must produce certain automatic and inherent changes. This is a point which must be grasped by esotericists.
- The widespread promiscuity of the sexes, and the rule in many countries which entitles man to possess many wives, which is an insult to women, will eventually and inevitably cease. It is in the last analysis a form of prostitution…. Through this lack of regulation and of essential rhythm, the natural consequences have occurred, and millions of souls have been brought into incarnation who were never intended at this time to incarnate and achieve exoteric manifestation. This fact is largely responsible for much of the present economic distress and for the modern planetary dilemma. The economic situation and the necessity to provide for the unduly large population of the planet lies behind much of the aggression and greed of the nation’s down the ages, and for the effort being made today as never before to provide better and more adequate living conditions…… (We could conclude that as more unplanned, or, unwanted, or, welfare payment induced, and quite possibly fatherless children are born, the strain on the ‘social’ system greatly intensifies)
- The science of eugenics and of sex hygiene and the development of mentally controlled relationships will steadily grow. (Eugenics: the science and art of improving the human breeds by so applying the principals of genetics and inheritance to secure a desirable combination for mental and physical aspects of the child from suitable mated parents…note: pass this one on to the ‘media’ and it will no doubt be labelled the next right wing plot.) Much that is now being taught along these lines is erroneous and wrongly motivated…. based only on improving physical and racial issues. The right form of scientific sex control, leading to those right conditions in which souls may incarnate, cannot be imposed by law. The desired ends may be aided by education…… but the real change in human consciousness which is needed will appear only as the race itself is brought under rhythmic law – under which the animal lives function, or the seasonal law of the vegetable kingdom. (hmmm. Does this mean ‘heat’ cycles.)
- As yet it is only the religious person who thinks in terms of the two necessitated and inevitable births, the physical and the spiritual, and he thinks of the relation between the two as purely symbolic and not in any way to be interpreted literally. Yet there is a close relation and an analogy between the two which, as time elapses, will become more clear. There can be no new birth, no creation of the ‘body of light’, and no ‘manifestation of the son of god’ apart from the process of physical incarnation…… The underlying idea, governing all that has been given out on the sex relation heretofore, is twofold in its implications:
- To provide bodies for incarnating souls so that certain destined evolutionary unfoldments may be carried forward, and the attainment of an equally destined and inevitable spiritual unfoldment becomes possible.
- To impart the scientific procedure whereby bodies ‘built in the dark’ may gradually be superseded by bodies ‘built in the light’….
- The sex relation has, therefore, only one major objective, which is to produce physical bodies for incarnating souls. The relation between soul and the personality is consequently a higher aspect of the basic sex expression of the universe, and this relation is intended to bring about the appearance of a son of God as light in the world, enabling him to say, as did the Christ, that he is ‘the light of the world’ and to fulfill the injunction, ‘let your light shine’…..
These five points were meant to be suggestive and something that can be thought through as elementary ideas designed to bring in newer attitudes to parenting/marriage responsibility. One of the tasks of the future teachers will be to educate people around the meaning of the Law of Rebirth and by doing so bring about a major change in attitude towards sex, birth, parenthood, sex rhythm, cyclic experience psychological preparation and directed and controlled building of the bodies… all to replace the current practise of uncontrolled response to the sex urge and desire and the unthinking procreation of children.
The preparation of adults for the duties and responsibilities of parenthood and their training in the important and true necessities of the child will shift to the mental and spiritual levels of consciousness. The light which is inherent in the parents, which will be at some point seen clairvoyantly by an increasing number of people, will be scientifically related to the embryonic light in the child and the thread of light connecting parent and child ( the umbilical cord is the exoteric symbol) will be carefully constructed.
Within this section of Marriage and Children, we can all work out some sort of ideal approach based on our own ability to understand and our current level of attainment. I believe however, that much of what the Tibetan provides us with will be seen only in the next few hundred or more years as science finally comes to grips with our surroundings and the majority of us become more soul infused.
Sex and chakras
The Sacral centre is known to control our sex lives to a great extent and will remain a very powerful centre until two thirds of humanity have taken the first initiation so that the reproductive urge remains in place to provide bodies for incoming souls.
A few points concerning the sacral centre:
- The sacral centre has a correspondence to the physical Sun, our source of vitality and life giving energy.
- The symbolism of the sacral centre is mainly around the gestation period prior to birth and I believe this is the case due to the sacral centre normally being drawn with 9 petals. The Tibetan says if we can rightly understand the symbolism, we can trace and expand the whole issue of conception, form-building and this is the case whether we are looking at the physical human form, the form of an idea, an organisation built around a central truth, or the form of a planet or solar system. Yet, above everything else the sacral centre must eventually express the forces of impersonality and through which the whole problem of duality must be solved. I imagine that this at least partly means as we move our energy centre of gravity up, the sacral centre will be able to function as intended, without astral implications, from the plane of mind and therefore a more impersonal approach.
- The sacral centre is closely related to matter and a flow of energy circulates around three points in the lower part of the human body.
- The spleen, which receives the prana from the Sun.
- The sacral centre, our area of regeneration.
- The centre at the base of the spine which provides the will to live, the life giving principle.
These three create a triangle of force that is concerned with matter and with substance, form-building, creation, vitality and persistence in our form and is a reflection of a much higher triangle:
- The throat centre, corresponding to the sacral.
- The pituitary body, corresponding to the spleen.
- The pineal gland, corresponding to the base.
When the relation of these two triangles is studied the Tibetan says lies the clue hidden within, ‘concerning the instinct’ of self-preservation, the survival of the subtle bodies after death and the principle of immortality which is seated in the soul and functions when self-preservation and survival no longer holds us. I wonder that this may have something to do with the pineal gland which I believe is the seat of the soul during incarnation.
- In the final analysis, apparently the sacral centre is also connected with the ajna centre and the two together create a functioning quality that is the subtle quality which we call personality.
The Tibetan says that the relation of the lunar lords and the solar angels is interesting in that the lunar lords are the sacral centre and the solar angels are the throat centre… of what he does not say, but I assume a greater life form.
- The sacral centre registers the energy of the third aspect of divinity, and the solar plexus the second aspect and the base the first, so here we again see the lower centres reflecting the throat, heart and head centres and this completes the lower and the higher manifestation of the divine Trinity in the human form.
- The dense physical externalisation of the sacral centre is the human gonads or the human organs of generation which are at this point separated (man – women) until far in the future we become the hermaphrodite when this dualism will be over. Because of this current separation we have the powerful impulse towards fusion, union or sex. Sex is simply the instinct towards unity on the physical level and we can see the correspondence with the principle of mysticism which is the urge towards fusion of or union with the divine at a higher level.
At times we have seen those in the stage of the mystical life burdened with sexual difficulty in the area of self-control due to their touching the heights of spiritual contact which brings in the energy of soul to the personality and that energy passes down into the sacral centre and is not stopped at the throat as it should be. Sexual control needs to be learned first, with a balanced control proportioned with the rest of the life activities and thought life.
In the undeveloped or those low down in the so called racial scale, the sacral centre motivates the physical life and the solar plexus centre governs the psychic nature and in these cases the higher centres are undeveloped. What we have here is the solar plexus perceiving in the lower psychic arena what the brain really should be perceiving or is intended to perceive in the world of the higher psychic area. So in the first case the man is overcome in a state of astral consciousness which governs the sex life. However, in the case of the highly developed, you have the head centre identified with etheric matter and the physical brain with its physical functions, sympathetically, accurately and synchronously with its subjective counterpart, registering impressions from the head centre and the worlds that this centre puts the man in touch with… the two are then as one.
The brain needs to become sensitive to the awakening mind and not so occupied with the form and its registering of impressions and when this happens we can then have the orientation which will eventually raise the consciousness into the centres above the diaphragm.
When the energies of the sacral centre, once focussed on the physical creation, and sex life are sublimated and re-orientated to the throat centre, then we become a conscious creative force in the higher worlds and enter within the ‘veil’ and begin to create the new patterns of living.
The Tibetan tells us that we have to withdraw our consciousness from those (lower) centres; this is not an easy task for it means working against the results of age-long development…. We have to direct the attention of the creative impulse to the mental plane and in doing so, if successful, we will turn the activity of the divine fire to the throat centre and its corresponding head centre, instead of to the lower organs of generation.
We are provided a table that indicates how humanity is intended to be from the perspective of the centres and not how it necessarily is today.
(WM. 285)
- Self-assertion —– the coordinated —– Centre at the base —– Adrenals
(full development) quaternary
- Self-expression —– lower brain —– Throat centre —– Thyroid
(creative work)
- Self-conscious life —– upper brain —– Head Centre —– Pineal gland
(personality)
- Self-perpetuation —– sex organs —– Sacral Centre —– Sex glands
- Mental life —– Cerebro-spinal system —– Ajna —– Pituitary
- Sensory life —– sympathetic nervous —— Solar plexus —– Pancreas
system
- Cell life —– blood stream —— Heart centre —– Heart
We are told that certain centres are of paramount importance to the disciple as follows:
- The ajna centre where the purified personality expresses itself.
- The centre at the base of the spine where we need to achieve complete and utter control and coordination via the arousing of the purifying agency of fire, kundilini.
- The sacral centre where the basic force of this solar system, the attraction of form to form, is transmuted leading to the attractive force of the soul taking place over the reproductive and materialistic qualities.
- The solar plexus centre which is the organ of the astral body and the lower psychism, gathers together the lower forces and sends them under the guidance of the soul to the higher centres.
Although the sacral to throat is our main focus regarding the urge to union and of course sex, we can see that other centres are in play as well, during the life cycles of an aspirant and disciple.
A further view regarding the centres:
The lower centres transfer to the higher and this is carried on within the personality and is paralleled by the transference of spiritual energy from the soul to the man on the physical plane and now soul action can become possible as the man makes the needed transference within himself. (see the next section for more detail)
- The energy of the base must be raised and carried up the spinal column to the head centre, via the ajna.
- The sacral must be raised to the throat which now becomes the organ of creative activity of a non-physical nature.
- The energy of the solar plexus must be raised to the heart and transmuted into group service.
Transmutation and transference of sacral
After the first initiation, the entire sex relationship moves gradually into its intended function as simply a basic and natural function or phase of existence in our three worlds and one with a so called correct appetite, yet with a changed emphasis. So, the higher experience and correspondence (physical sex is only the symbol) becomes apparent and instead of male/female we have the emergence of the magnetic relationship between the now negative personality and the positive soul, along with the creativity upon the higher planes.
Of this relationship, the head centre and the ajna centre are the agents and moving along, through the medium of the pituitary body and pineal gland, they condition the personality, making it now soul infused.
We have been taught that the activity, or the inactivity of the centres conditions the personality, working through the endocrine system and here the energies which the centres channel and the forces they generate can be controlled by the soul. Also, we know that the energy of the sacral centre has to be transmuted and raised to the throat thus transforming physical creative to the higher creative process (the good, the beautiful, the true). It has been emphasized as well by the Tibetan (over and over again) that we have sought to stamp out natural desire by enforced celibacy or have gone the other way and tried to exhaust sexual desire through promiscuity (on the surface the later seems like more fun, but neither works) thus setting up problems that need to be solved over future incarnations.
True transmutation is in reality the achieving of correct proportion in any phase of life. When a proper recognition of the place our sex life should play in the daily life is put in play with the concentration of thought concerning the throat centre, that centre will become automatically magnetic and will attract the forces of the sacral centre upward through the spine into the ‘place of creative building’, and the sex life is naturally regulated to its place as one of the usual faculties or appetites that humans are endowed with. It is brought under control through the lack of directed interest.
A properly regulated physical life comes about then we have an integrated personality and the ajna is active and is coming under the control of soul. This will have an immediate effect that is automatically induced upon the gland associated with this centre (pituitary) as it becomes a balanced part of the general endocrine system. As well, the pineal comes into its own as the head centre becomes active as a result of the aspirants mental perception, meditation and service.
What is happening as the increasing activity of these ‘two points of light within the head’ moves forward, is related to the sacral and throat centres … as the transmutative process proceeds and the energies of the sacral area is gathered up to the throat (not all of it so it keeps functioning) the two head centres become correspondingly active and the light in the head shines forth. Now we have free interplay between the ajna centre and the head centre and therefore between the pituitary body and the pineal gland. Once this line of light is present and there is an unobstructed relation between the two centres and the two glands, then the first initiation is possible. At this point the line of light is tenuous and unstable, but it is in existence. Its this energy let loose at the first initiation, distributed into the sacral and the throat centres, via of the slowly awakening head centre, which brings the transmutation process to a successful conclusion and stabilises the relationship within the head.
There is an upward trend and a downward trend regarding the energy of our centres where the aspirant or disciple is concerned and the process is spread over many lifetimes… first unconscious transmutation, leading to conscious effort and tough experiences later on. This process is not sequential due to all the variables of karma and ray makeup, however here are the general outlines:
- The upward trend that produces transmutation.
..From the sacral to the throat centres as physical creation is greatly transmuted to artistic creativity.
..From the solar centre to the heart centre as individual and emotional consciousness is transmuted to group consciousness.
..From the base of the spine to the head centre as material force is transmuted to spiritual energy.
..From any or all of the five spinal centres to the ajna centre as uncoordinated living is transmuted into personality integration.
..From the six centres in relationship into the highest head centre as personality activity is transmuted into spiritual living.
- The downward trend that produces transformation.
Once the head centre is awakening and the disciple is consciously working to direct his life and directing his energy to the centres, there is a scientific undertaking of energising the centres in a certain ordered rhythm, determined by rays and karma etc..
..The stage of energising the creative life, via the throat centre which brings:
- The head centre and the throat centre,
- These two and the sacral centre,
- All three, consciously and simultaneously, into conscious relation.
This relation, once established will solve the individuals problem with sex, not by inhibition, but by bringing right control, yet at the same time making the disciple creative in a worldly sense.
..The stage of energising the conscious life of relationship via the heart centre, thus:
- The head centre and the heart centre,
- These two and the solar plexus centre,
- All three, simultaneously and consciously, into close cooperation.
This serves to establish right human relation, and right group and spiritual relations throughout the life. Just as when the stage of regulating the physical appetites/creative life has a major effect on the physical body, this stage has a potent effect on the astral vehicle; emotional reactions are transformed into aspiration and service; selfish individual love is transformed into group love, at which time divinity is the rule.
- The stage of energising the entire man via the base centre:
- The head centre and the basic centre,
- These two and the ajna centre,
- All these three into a simultaneous and conscious, rhythmic and coordinated expression. This final stage only takes place in completeness at the time of the third initiation.. the transfiguration.
So, we have the three important happenings… Transmutation, Transformation, Transfiguration.
Finally, we will look at transference relative to the progression of the man:
- The centres are barely active and are sluggish and the light is dim and just enough energy pours in to maintain life, the instinctual nature, tendencies to be reactive in an unintelligent manner due to stimuli from the astral plane via the astral body.
- The force is now definitely heightened and intensified and the light at the centres is brighter and the solar plexus centre is very active. The focus is still downward and the centres above are dim and not active… and we have the average intelligent person, yet controlled mainly by the lower nature. The centres are primarily the receivers of physical and astral forces, with some mental impacts.
- Over several lives, the first transference is being made and the centres below the diaphragm are fully awakened and the light is bright and their interrelation is so much that a magnetic field has been set up involving the whole area below the diaphragm, with some influence above as well. The solar plexus is dominant in place of the sacral and it becomes the recipient of energy streams from below which it absorbs and starts on its task of deflecting and transferring them to the higher centres. The man is now the highly intelligent person and aspirant and is conscious of the dualism of his nature and is now ready for the probationary path.
- The transference continues and the sacral force is carried to the throat and the solar plexus to the heart. The latter (heart) is faint, yet the period is a long and very difficult one and is preparatory to the expression of the mystical life.
- The heart and throat centres are now brought into activity and the man is creatively intelligent along some line and is slowly becoming group conscious, although his motivation is somewhat selfish. He is subject to cycles of vision and periods of spiritual effort and he is becoming a mystic.
- A second period of transference goes forward and the ajna centre (governing the integrated personality) becomes active and dominant. Quite possibly the life of feeling and mystical effort dies down temporarily and the personality integration, ambition, and aims takes its place which is actually correct as this tends to round out the development. At this point the man reaches the so called Zenith of his personality life and the centres below the head will all be active and functioning, but the centres below the diaphragm will be subordinated and controlled by those above. The ajna is vivid and potent, the throat in intensely active and the heart is rapidly awakening, yet at this point the focus is the expression of personality.
- Now the highest head centre is brought into radiant activity as the result of a fresh uprising of the mystical instinct and an intelligent approach to reality. The soul begins to pour its energy into all the etheric or vital centres, via the head centre and the point at the heart of each centre comes into its first real activity. It becomes radiant, brilliant, magnetic and forceful. All the centres are swept into ordered activity by the forces of Love and Will. Then the final transference of all the bodily and psychic energies into the head centre through the awakening of the centre at the base of the spine. The great polar opposites (symbolized by head and base) are fused and blended and from this time on the man is controlled only from above by the soul.
So, wasn’t that easy?
Disease
Other than the more obvious disease associated with sex, such as syphilis, the Tibetan gives us other concerns to be aware of. The Lemurian age brought us the troubles around the misuse of the sex act, thus sexual diseases and the Atlantean brought forward the disease of Cancer, whose deep roots are in the emotional or desire nature. Cancer is at least partly a reaction to the diseases connected with the sex life as the people of early Atlantis saw the horrible affects of the sex diseases and so for the sake of self-preservation, dammed up the natural flow of desire.. so Cancer is primarily a disease of inhibition. During the Lemurian times the planetary Logos imposed a new law of nature to teach man the karmic effect of unregulated sex, (EH. 229) “The soul that sinneth, it shall die” and the Tibetan expresses it as “He that misuses that which he hath built will see it fall from forces within himself”. So it seems that the work of the black lodge had to be offset and once again man paid the penalty. (These guys are tough teachers, certainly the current socialistic education approach in the west would be considered wimpish by these standards.. the standards that are actually used to teach us) The reaction of the Atlanteans is understandable when we consider that the Tibetan says that with the appearance of the venereal diseases, the entire race of Lumurians was wiped out. He says that with modern medicine learning to wipe out venereal diseases, the soil of the Earth will eventually be purified, however it will take around one million years.
During Atlantean times the tendency to marriage began and the family unit took shape… it brought a sense of responsibility and pride in family genetic strain and certainly the issue of monogamy became important. Thus the concern over the venereal diseases as they affect family and offspring has been a result.
Also during Atlantean times, desire became more than the physical appetites and material possessions and coveting whatever could be appropriated became common and the major so called sin of the Atlanteans was theft.
On one hand we are told that rampant desire is a definite no-no, yet also it is important to understand that if desire is inhibited , all kinds of diseases such as cancer, lung congestion and liver issues, along with tuberculosis become the norm. With the conclusion section of this paper I will have to try and sort out just what are we supposed to do at this point?
Cancer is related to the centres and the overactive centre is a prime area of concern, with an increase of energy pouring into the surrounding tissue.. so the problem is not only the over activity and use of the centre and its consequent radiation, but also the suppression imposed by the mind upon any activity of a particular centre which seems to have the effect of focusing energy in the given centre. Either way we dam up the energy and cause a concentration. We are told that one of the main causes of cancer related to the sacral centre has been the well intentioned suppression of the sex life by misguided aspirants. Anyway, energy follows thought and so the magnetic energy attracts an increasing number of cells and atoms to itself, and we have tumours as a result.
The Tibetan gives four results of a frustrated sex life, briefly:
- Great devitalisation and ill health
- Constant effort to attract the opposite sex, becomes a nervous tendency.
- Development of homosexual habits
- Tumours
Apparently there are some planetary forms which are not in physical existence now and a couple of them are close to Earth and there emanations seem to have an influence on us here with the result of sexual cruelties. Their power is diminishing.
The Tibetan tells us that as the race develops right emotional control we will see the disappearance of cancer and by right control he emphasises that inhibition and the suppression of the desire impulse by the force of will is not right control. He also says that womens inhibition is more around sex and mens is more around emotional-desire feeling, thus more men will suffer from cancer than women, overall. Eventually the secret of right transmutation will bring us the cure for cancer.
One of the basic issues is that we do not follow the Law of Rhythm or Periodocity in most cases and so we are not governed properly by the cyclic manifestation of the sex impulse and therefore having life ruled by a definite rhythm. These laws are given form on the mental plane and for instance the Law of Cycles which determines the tides and controls world events, should also condition the individual man and establish rhythm in the life which is one of the major predisposing incentives to good health. As they are given form on the mental plane I would suggest that we should therefore consider the moving of our interest to the mental plane from the physical and astral as a clue around disease prevention.
Sex and disciples
Man is no better than women and women is no better than man and so God has ordained from the beginning that men and women should meet each others needs and act as complements to each other. The belief that being a disciple means leading a celibate life is not correct (other than a specific life of demonstration) as man is meant to work with all the functions of nature; animal, human and divine. The Tibetan says that there is no better training school for a disciple and an initiate than family life, with its enforced relations (here is a good reason for men not to have multiple wives, they end up with multiple mother in laws !) its scope for adjustment and adaptability and its demand for sacrifice and service and the opportunity for the full expression of every part of mans nature.
The celibacy required is that of the higher nature to the demands of the lower, and the refusal of the disciple to be dominated by the personality and the lower nature.
We are also told that many of the masters marry and produce children.
Conclusions
Each one of the headings I’ve chosen above could easily fill a ‘paper’ and the whole topic of sex and union, an entire book. From my study of the topic coupled with my comparatively own limited experience, I would have thought a clear way forward would simply pop out and become obvious, however this has not happened, at least for me as yet.
The term ‘Schizophrenia’ could be applied to the bulk of humanity when we consider the topic of sex and the reactions to it. With sex we often have; delusional thinking, wrong perception, inferential thinking, strange behaviour, hedonic capacity, and generally impaired thinking and social functioning on all sides of the issue.
The Tibetan comes down relatively hard on the topic of sex, concerning both its overuse and suppression, yet we all know he approach’s this topic from a Masters viewpoint, and of course with complete love and wisdom. Its of interest that much of what he says seems to fly in the face of the current socialistic trends concerning what life is all about and its associated responsibilities, or lack thereof.
From the point of view of humanity in the west, currently we often have governments too readily paying people to stay home (not workfare), paying people to have babies (welfare), and a lack of effective education around parenthood or childcare that is meaningful, certainly compared to the prescription that the Tibetan gives us, so it would seem that we are someway off from a guidance point of view. The population in many cases seems to be growing in the areas that would attract young souls not intended to incarnate at this time and as such this will possibly deepen the problem from the obvious maturity point of view. Regardless, we are ‘all one’ in a true sense, and should focus on what we as individuals bring to the problems at hand and above all remain harmless in thought and speech.
As individuals, I can’t help but think of the Buddha’s statements around finding the middle path between the opposites and coupled with a wise discernment of where we are on the path, its my judgement that we can come up with an approach that is well suited to each of us. I can certainly sense that if the sex life is suppressed it is simply given more energy and of course if promiscuity is the life, then the energy is obviously pouring down into the lower centres and being acted upon, so both of these ‘opposites’ are a problem.
The Tibetan tells us that evil can be viewed as (TCF. 618) “that which can be controlled or subdued but which is permitted to govern” and in this statement I wonder that we can at least partly determine the sex issues that we are not bothering to control or raise up, when they in fact could be. We have to keep awareness in all of this of our own needs and place upon the path and discover new ways to be creative in the higher sense to assist in the raising of our energy and realise that effort is required. If we can understand and recognize the place our sex life should play in our current lifecycle and put this to practise with the concentration of thought in regards to the throat centre, that centre will become automatically magnetic and will attract the forces of the sacral up and we will become more naturally regulated. Disciples that are further along the path no doubt carry more responsibility around the issue of sex in that they are more aware of ‘that which can be controlled’.
The issue goes well beyond sex and union, as we must fully incorporate the key topics of harmlessness and right human relations in our lives.
A few interesting statements from the Tibetan, possibly out of the full context, however in these we can see the scope of the issue as it affects the mass of humanity and note that the final outcome of procreation only for new forms for incarnation souls is still a wee way off for many of us:
(EA. 234)
…It is not my intention here to indicate the solution of the problem of sex. Humanity will inevitably work it out as the aeons slip away…
(EP1. 268)
…(sex can be) regarded as an instinctual and as necessary as the functions of eating and drinking.
(EP1. 268-69)
…(should be) reduced to a rhythm in the daily life and regarded as one to be followed and satisfied only when need arises and right demands.
(EP1. 272)
…There is no immediate solution of the problem of sex with which we are at this time confronted.
(Educ. in New Age. 131 —)
…it will then be found that there are certain innate reactions which will negate conception, and then the mechanical means will no longer be required.
From the overall humanity view, we might wonder if the so called problem of sex will get worse or otherwise that humanity would fail in its long term goal of raising this creative energy higher. Could mass suppression take over, or more promiscuity? From the angle of public opinion and laws in the west, I wouldn’t forsee this happening. Controlling our lives does not seem to interest the ‘right wing’ at this point in time and the ‘left wing - media’ does wish to, however they are at least as caught up in the issues of sex as the mass of humanity so it would not be to their benefit.
It seems to me that this issue, from the individual angle, is one that each of us has to work out the best we can with the information at hand, with the requirement that we face up to whatever facts and issues are before us, and act. Realize that as we do act, we bring our own tiny change into the thought and astral life of humanity and therefore we bring us all closer to Union with Soul.
Quoting something that I have heard Blair Little of SEQL say and seems very appropriate in this quest: Have a clear vision of the end result of who you should be in this life — and live now, as though you are the end result.
